What's The Diff?

The things Quicken Loans team members care about and want to share with the world

To Resolve or Not to Resolve, That is the Question

Editor’s note: we are pleased to post our first entry submitted by someone not affiliated with Quicken Loans or one of our partner companies.  Who is next to appear on the DIFF?

ResolutionBy C. Thomas Terry

In the nether months of 2006, I received this picture from my holiday work party. Apart from the fashionable co-workers flanking my mid-party mug, the picture tells an ugly story and was a real wake-up call. Having not seen a recent picture of myself in recent months, I was stunned at how–let’s be gracious–horrific I looked (contrary to the optics, I wasn’t over-served; I was blinking).  When had I started shaving only a few times a week? How did I not notice? How did I ever think this looked remotely cool? When had my face swelled to look like a Hamtramck paczkiWhen did I get this OLD?

The Power of One Person

Angela DiSarno is an intern with the Quicken Loans Careers Connection (recruiting) team.  Congratulations on a great post, Angela.

SarahBy Angela DiSarno

When I first thought about who in the world made “The DIFF” for me, I instantly knew it was my old roommate, Sarah, from Mackinac Island, Michigan. Sarah and I spent the summer working for the Island House Hotel and lived together in a downtown Mackinac dorm above Ryba’s Fudge shop.

Sarah is the type of person who can look at a person and see directly into their soul.

She told me of a time when she was working at Cedar Point Amusement Park and saw a young teen dressed in black staring at a massive roller coaster. Sarah walked by and asked him if he needed help with anything around the park.

Do High School Grades Make a Difference?

By Kathy Fawcett

What difference did your high school grades make in your adult life?

The other day I met the future valedictorian of my son’s class of 2011. How do I know? His mom told me. "He’s the top student in the class," she said, but worries that his advanced class placement in high school might lower his chances if he should get his first ever B.

I scrambled to think of just one of my son’s teacher’s names while she talked, and gazed at the boys, my son being the one who just a few years ago, stapled a stuffed squirrel to the shoulder of his shirt before he left for school. "You must be so proud." Really, though, it made me realize how little I really care about grades.

Dog Saves Human with Heimlich Maneuver

Yes, you read that headline correctly.

One of my favorite things to do is to read weird news stories because it sometimes makes me laugh. Here’s one that really fascinated me and made my jaw drop this time. It’s a story about a Golden Retriever that saved its owners life by performing the Heimlich Maneuver on her after she started choking on a piece of fruit. It just goes to show you don’t have to understand what the DIFF is to be the DIFF.

Read the story on MSNBC here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17819432

Grandpa and the Sports Hall of Fame

Pops

By Paul J. Pickett

Can your grandpa slam dunk?

Yeah, mine can’t either. He never did make it to the NBA, NFL or MLB. As a matter of fact, he’s never even thrown for a touchdown, hit a homerun or coached a championship team either. But he still made it to a sports hall of fame. Do you know why?

Well, after being a student journalist and basketball statistician during his time at Margaretta High School in Castalia, Ohio, “Pops” (as I call him) has come to be known as the unofficial photographer for Margaretta Athletics.

That’s Our Policy and We’re Stickin’ to It

Wow!! Talk about doing things the wrong way! Here’s a humorous story from the Detroit News about a lady going through a drive-thru at 2am for a simple cup of coffee and doughnut only to be completely frustrated by the restaurant’s completely ridiculous policy and the employees being WAY too adamant about enforcing said policy. I mean, how hard can it be to get a coffee and doughnut??

How Many Outgoing Messages Do You Need?

One thing that really annoys me is other people’s voicemail. I’m not talking about the fact that they’re not there to answer your call or even having to leave a message. I’m talking about having to listen to the outgoing message.

Let me set the scene for you: I call my husband. He’s doesn’t answer. I get his voicemail. His outgoing message includes the standard “Leave me a message” language, but he also includes his office number, blah, blah, blah, and his message ends up being fairly long. That’s not even that bad.

Here’s the part that REALLY annoys me.

Phone Charger for Hire

By Matt Cardwell

One of the things that consistently amazes me is how necessity nearly always drives some enterprising person into invention…especially when you can charge for that invention.

Phone booths may be on their way to obsolescence thanks to the growing ubiquity of cell phones, but in Uganda (where landlines are scarce and electricity spotty), budding street entrepreneurs have created cell phone charging booths to deal with the unpredictability of the country’s telecom and electricity infrastructure.

Check out the full post here: http://www.kk.org/streetuse/archives/2007/01/phone_charging_booths_in_ugand.php

Thanks to Dan Izzo over at the BizZoBlog from bring this example of the DIFF to our attention.

A Ride For 3 Reasons – Bob Lee’s Mission

Bob Lee of Ride For 3 ReasonsWhat do you call a man, who at the age of 65 decides to ride his bicycle 6,500 miles across the United States to raise money for charity?  And then, this man donates every penny he raises (and I mean every penny – not one cent goes to expenses) to three causes very near and dear to him.

You call him Bob Lee.

Bob Lee is the man behind A Ride For Three Reasons, a cross-country odyssey to raise funding for the fight against Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS) and cancer, and to support hospice care.

Quicken Loans is proud to be a sponsor of Bob’s ride across the country and we are privileged to have been given the opportunity to donate a new web site and blog for Bob’s ride.

Here’s a little background on Bob from his web site:

The Nintendo Wii Ain’t Your Father’s Video Game

Who would have figured a video game console could start something of a revolution? The Nintendo Wii (pronounced "wee")has taken off with more than a bang. This MSNBC.com article about the Wii talks about how the console has exploded way beyond its intended demographic of children and young guys. It’s so popular that even retirees are taking to it. They’re playing Wii tennis video games and even having Wii bowling parties! How cool is THAT! I’ve never been one to live without exercise, so I also think it’s cool that it’s getting people off the couch and into some form of active movement/mild exercise. But who would’ve thunk it would be so popular among the masses?
