Corporate Culture is Not Just Slushies and Popcorn

Quicken Loans Intern Mark Messing Bids Farewellby Mark Messing

Mark was an intern for the Quicken Loans Marketing team this summer.  Mark has now returned to Michigan State.  Below is an excerpt from his "goodbye note" and it's a great take on what corporate culture is really all about.  Congratulations Mark on a sucessful internship and good luck your senior year at MSU!

There is a lot of people who talk about the culture of this company.  I think that we all know the things I mean when I say “the Quicken Loans culture,” so for the most part, I will spare you on those details which have been covered already.

At the risk of sounding corny:

I can’t thank a "culture."  I can only thank the people responsible for creating it.  In many ways, the people ARE the culture.

The people who make everyday decisions to attack projects as a team, and always lend a helping hand, and always stop to answer each others questions.  Those things are spurred on by the people.

Slushees (we get them free at Quicken Loans), though delicious, have very little future value for me.  I can’t walk into my next interview and WOW them with the captivating stories of “the day I had the strawberry one.”  However, I can talk about all of the things I have gained from the people here.

The people who allowed me to mess up to learn a few things, were on hand for every single question I asked, gave me the opportunities to prove myself, reacted and faced every challenge that came their way, and helped to map out this crazy industry which we are in.

I thank you for giving me the ability to say such things, and for giving me the chance to change in a very positive way.

I am looking for some good marketing/advertising related books to read (aside from “Your Marketing Sucks,” which I already have).

Please let me know if you have any recommendations for marketing/advertising books/blogs.

Couldn't we have gotten our brilliant web design team to photoshop some muscles onto that pic.

But Mark, Photoshopped muscles wouldn't be keepin' it real, would it? LOL.

Hope you're enjoying your return to MSU. Sorry in advance for the whoopin' your team will get when they face U of M in football. :P

Mark, I told you QL is a great place to be. I'm glad you had an amazing experience at QL. Not too many people in college can say that they were able to get involved in half of the projects you were able to.
