What's The Diff?

The things Quicken Loans team members care about and want to share with the world

A bit of DIFF – Post-It style

Ahhh yes, most of the time it is the small things that make the DIFF in our lives.

Check out this blog by Etre, a user experience company. It’s got a short, simple video with the answer to the burning question deep within all our souls: how do I make this darn post-it stay?

Seeing the unbelievable on the ski slopes

Skiing in a chair on the Quicken Loans blogWe have a saying at Quicken Loans. "You see it when you believe it."

It’s actually one of our ISMS, or principles that drive our corporate culture.

Anyway, I know it’s true because I saw first-hand something that I would have considered impossible before I actually saw it.

I saw skiers who had one leg, no legs and even blind. Yes, that’s right. Blind skiers, going full speed down the slopes.

I’m not lying.

Spirit Week at Quicken Loans!

In honor of our #2 spot on FORTUNE Magazine’s "100 Best Companies to Work For," we had a bona fide Spirit Week last week at all our locations across the country – Michigan, Ohio, Arizona and our new partners in Cali, One Reverse Mortgage.

Each day had a different theme and team members dressed up to compete for the prize of lunch for the whole team! There are tons of pictures, so here’s a few to recap the week –

Remembering a brother with gifts of love

Jarrett "Spiderman" Knyal is remembered with a gift of love from Quicken LoansLast month when our friend and coworker Jarrett "Spiderman" Knyal died after a long battle with cancer, we put our heads and our pocketbooks together to help his surviving wife and two young children.

We are proud to announce that Quicken Loans employees raised over $13,000 for Jarrett’s family which Quicken Loans generously matched. This will give Jarrett’s family well over $26,000 that they didn’t expect.

Also, we’ve dedicated our Marketing Team parking spot (at the Quicken Loans headquarters) to Jarrett.  Going forward, we are purchasing the spot for $25 a week and sending the money to Jarrett’s family to do with as they please. It’s not a whole lot, but it might come in handy.

We hope our gifts of love help. Trust us, they are a just a small tribute to our friend Jarrett.  We’ll miss him forever.

A question for the Quicken Loans DIFF blog

What is an ISM? by whatsthediffblog, on Flickr

Today we got an e-mail to the DIFF asking what an ISM is. A reader from Ohio sent this in:

Hello.

I have heard about Quicken Loans ISMs but I am perplexed – why are they called ISMs?

I read the list and they are all great principles.  But, what is the connection to ISM?

Just curious.

Thanks,

Curious in Ohio (okay, that’s not how she signed it, I just always wanted to do that!)

So, even though "ISM" is a funny word, it’s actually a word and it’s in the dictionary:

A DIFF guest blogger anthology

We’ve recently gotten  e-mails from people both in and out of the United States that shared some stories. They’re short & sweet, so we’ve compiled a few here for your reading enjoyment. As always, if you’ve got something DIFFtastic to say, put it in writing and e-mail it to Info@WhatsTheDiff.com.

In random order:

"Music is What Counts" by Bonni Tuttle

My husband is a repair tech of musical instruments. One of the educational reps had brought in a Baritone sax that had been mishandled by a student. The teacher was in disrepair to get the instrument repaired for there was an audition that was being held for a musical school in New York and one of the students at the high school needed the bari sax for the audition. The part that was broken (one of the pins) had to be ordered and wouldn’t be in for 2 weeks. The teacher needed the instrument repaired by that Saturday. My husband made a pin to fix the key that was broken and no one could tell the difference. My husband hand delivered the instrument to the High School and did not charge for the repair. The student promised to take better care of the bari sax in the future.

Titleist Performance Institute: Performance Enhancement for Swingers (golf swingers)

Read the DIFF to find out more about Titleist's www.MyTPI.com by whatsthediffblog, on Flickr

by Paul J. Pickett

I didn’t grow up a fan of golf, but it’s grown on me lately. So if you love to play golf or if you know someone who does, this blog’s for you.

The last few days I’ve been perusing www.MyTPI.com. It’s the largest collection of golf-specific health and fitness information from the world’s leading experts in the game. The site is the online home of the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) – "The leaders in elite player development." If you’re a fan of golf, you know who TPI is. But for the rest of us, I think it’s easy to read the word "elite" and think they’re just for pro golfers, but that’s not completely accurate: they’re for anyone who wants to improve their game. Since I’m not a professional golfer (not even close), I like that. And what I especially like about them is how they utilize technology in helping their clients.

Recently I had a chance to pick the brain of TPI’s video-guru (his actual title is "New Media Artist."), Joe Hafera. Unlike me, Joe has a long history with the game of golf – he’s a lifer. He grew up as a player and student of the game with his father, PGA Instructor, John Hafera, and now he’s helping to capture and duplicate the efforts of TPI to help other golfers maximize their potential.
