Numb-what? Can you please repeat the word?

Sameer Mishra, 2008 National Spelling Bee by whatsthediffblog, on Flickr

Call me a dork, but I *love* spelling bees. I fared well in them as a child and still try to catch the highlights when the Scripps National Spelling Bee airs each year. But I know this much – the words they can spell in the National Spelling Bee are far more difficult than I can ever imagine.

Try for yourselves, brave friends –Scripps has a multi-round
test complete with dry, mechanical-sounding pronunciation to be found here.
When I took the official test, I thought it would be a miserable outcome. But,
according to Scripps, I would have qualified for the quarter-finals. Not too
bad.

Congrats to Sameer Mishra – you out-spelled me, young sir. He
also had the funniest moment of the bee. But then again, if someone said "numnah"
to me, I’d ask them to repeat the word too. Check out the hilarious video here.

  1. Hah! I think you *have* to be a word geek to write for the DIFF on a regular basis! Or, is it just one nasty coincidence that we all are??
I love this, and I also love the National Geographic Geography Bee: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/geographybee
