Friday, October 31, 2008The DIFF Team wishes everyone a very happy (and scary) Halloween 2008.
Be safe, look both ways before crossing the street when you’re trick or treating, don’t eat too much candy, and don’t party too much.
But most of all, remember – THERE REALLY IS SOMETHING IN YOUR CLOSET!!!!!

Dunkin Donuts offering free coffee sample
Thursday, October 30, 2008
Seems like we’ve been highlighting sites that offer free stuff a lot lately.
Maybe that’s cuz we LOVE free stuff. Free is good.
So, I figured I’d share the latest sample I found that you might enjoy. Some good old-fashioned Dunkin Donuts coffee.
Now, I have to admit I haven’t had Dunkin Donuts coffee in years. I used to drink it all the time when I was a hipster, hanging out till all hours of the early morning at downtown Detroit clubs, but it’s been awhile. I look forward to the coffee sample to bring me back to those glory days.
Also, you can follow Dunkin Donuts Twitter to keep connected to your fav donut company. And, of course, you can follow Quicken Loans Twitter to keep connected to your fav mortgage company. Keeping connected is good.
Almost as good as a free stuff in the mail.

Movember raises cash for prostate cancer research
Wednesday, October 29, 2008
Here’s another cool site suggested by my friends over at MS&L Digital. You can join an international movement to end prostate cancer and all you have to do is grow a mustache.
It’s really that simple.
It’s Movember and it’s coming soon. Soon as in November. Notice the similarity between "November" and "Movember". It ain’t a coincidence.
From Movember’s site:
Movember (the month formerly known as November) is a charity event held during November each year.

The Project for Public Spaces has Ties to Detroit
Monday, October 27, 2008"Project for Public Spaces (PPS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated
to helping people create and sustain public places that build
communities."
Although they’re based in New York, their reach extends around the world. Their project areas include parks, public markets, squares and waterfronts just to name a few. Their site also provides and opportunity to nominate a great public space and invite PPS to help work on your space.
And these are big projects we’re talking about. In Michigan for instance, PPS is helping to diversify farmers markets and public markets. In Detroit proper, they are helping to develop an outreach plan for the Eastern Market.

CNN’s Top 10 Heroes of 2008
Sunday, October 26, 2008
On Thanksgiving at 9 PM (EST), CNN’s Anderson Cooper will host "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute."
These aren’t heroes who can run 40 yards in four seconds, or score 100 points in a basketball game. They aren’t guys who have built business empires that makes billions.
They are regular people who have dedicated their lives to helping others. According to CNN:
"Our Top 10 CNN Heroes are proof that you don’t need superpowers — or millions of dollars — to change the world and even save lives," Cooper said.
CNN launched its second annual global search for ordinary people accomplishing extraordinary deeds in February. The network has aired weekly CNN Hero profiles of those people, chosen from more than 3,700 nominations submitted by viewers in 75 countries.

Nicole Tongson – the “DIFF Dreamer” – is Chicago bound
Friday, October 24, 2008
Saying goodbye sucks, especially when it’s someone you like.
So it’s with great sadness and regret that I continue the DIFF tradition of a goodbye post when someone on the DIFF team leaves us.
That someone is the super nice and super cute Nicole Tongson.
Nicole is a very awesome and hard-working designer with us here at Quicken Loans. She’s contributed to the DIFF, our flagship site – www.quickenloans.com,and numerous other smaller sites.
I’ve been working professionally on websites in one way or another since about 1998. One thing I learned pretty early on is that good designers and good technical guys (programmers, engineers, whatever you want to call them) are "difficult" to work with. It goes with the territory. If they aren’t "difficult", I assume they kinda suck at what they do.
But not Nicole.

Space tourist returns with $30M less in his pocket but with memories you’ll never have
Friday, October 24, 2008
Space is the final frontier. And it’s gonna remain that way for a long time if it costs $30,000,000 to be a space tourist.
Trust me, I’d love nothing more than to visit space. I just need it to come down about $29,990,000 in cost before I can consider it. I could probably afford 10 grand. It’ll be there one day. I can wait.
Until then, I can dream about being someone like video game mogul Richard Garriott, who CNN reports just returned from a 10-day and $30M visit to the International Space Station, courtesy of the Russian Space Tourism program. Like I said, I’d buy a ticket if I could afford one.
And no, silly, that’s not Garriott in the picture. But that is Lakia, the first dog to successfully make it back from space. Lakia was a street mutt who became a national Soviet hero when she blasted off and returned safely in Sputnik 2.
Anyway, back to Garriott.
