What's The Diff?

The things Quicken Loans team members care about and want to share with the world

Only one day left for a free breakfast at IKEA

Since the DIFF blog has lately turned into the place to find free stuff (we all do love free stuff after all), I figured I'd throw in a quick mention of IKEA's offer to give you a free breakfast – which ends tommorrow.

Never mind that the breakfast only costs 2 bucks. Cheapskates can't be choosers.

So if you are in the mood to go to a store better known for funky furniture and meatballs, stop by the cafeteria for some free grub. Tell them the DIFF sent you!

Oh, first, you'll have to go to the webpage below and print out the coupon.

Panera Bread: Free Coffee & Breakfast Samples Today Only!

Free coffee at Panera today! January 28, 2009 The DIFF looooooooves free. Don't you? You love the DIFF too, right? Great…then we'll let you in on a little secret.

Only today, warm up by going to Panera and getting a free cup of coffee. They're also having samples of all their breakfast specials! If you're looking for more than a sample, I do recommend the Cinnamon Crunch bagel with Honey Walnut cream cheese. I heard they're also removing the calories from this delicacy  today too. (No, they're not. I just tell myself that.)

As if free goodies and coffee weren't enough, I also found this on their website:

When you visit on January 28th for free coffee and delicious breakfast
samples, we also invite you to donate $1 to support our Operation
Dough-Nation® Community BreadboxTM program.
Participating bakery-cafes will match the amount raised, up to $250 per
bakery-cafe, with funds going to support local programs that address
community needs.

Awesome! Feel good + Free stuff = DIFF.

El Barzon Restaurant is excellente!

El Barzon Restaurant in Detroit is Excellente!Every so often you come across one of those little gems that you feel like sharing with friends.  Maybe it's a great book, an amazing movie, a cheap vacation hideaway, or a restaurant.

This time it's a restaurant, the El Barzon in southwest Detroit. Man, it's a great little place.

If you live in the Detroit area, I would advise checking it out. It's absolutely worth the drive and price. In fact, I would say it's well under-priced right now (not sure how long it will stay that way as it is becoming a hot place and my guess is its prices may rise).

If you don't live near Detroit and may never make it to El Barzon, consider this a salute to the small businessperson who took a big risk and it worked.

Consider this another spicy and tasty example of the American Dream in action – Mexican/Italian style.

Michelle Obama’s Dress – A Different Fashion Style

US-POLITICS-INAUGURATION-OBAMA

There was a lot of buzz yesterday about Shelly O's dress choices for inauguration day. The dresses seemed to inspire either loathing or adoration, and no middle ground!

I'm not here to give a review on the dresses themselves, but want to echo a sentiment from a site I love called A Dress a Day. The blog talks about the lucky chosen designers' intentions and the superb craftsmanship that went into the dressmaking. It also lauds her choices as exquisite.

But most importantly, the blog notes that the choices are distinctly Michelle. She wasn't out to please any critics; she only intended to wear what made her feel great. And that panache heralds a rare brand of style that can only come from a strong sense of self and purpose.

Quicken Loans makes the Fortune “Best Companies to Work for” list

Quicken Loans Insider - we made the list!Yay! Today we're celebrating our sixth straight year of making Fortune Magazine's “100 Best Companies to Work for in America” list! We're #29 this year!

Making the list is always a noteworthy accomplishment, but bearing in mind that the country’s financial sector has been in turmoil this past year, we're especially pleased to have retained our title.

It’s also worth mentioning that Quicken Loans is the only mortgage company on the list, and the highest ranked Michigan company on the list.

Welcome, Mr. President

Quicken Loans Congratulates and Welcomes President Barack Obama I'd like to personally welcome and congratulate President Barack Obama as he works through his first real day on the job.

Not sure being the most powerful man on earth is such an enviable job, but someone has to do it and I'm guessing President Obama has the experience, intelligence, personality, confidence and courage needed to do it well. We'll see.

Yesterday spirits were pretty high for most people I know (not all, but most) and for most of the world, for that matter. That's always a good thing. Good karma for Mr. President to get started on the right foot.

Today, he froze pay raises for White House staff who make more than 100k.  Seems to be getting off on the right foot, I must say.

Free Inauguration Day Donuts at Krispy Kreme!

Krispy Kreme gives away free donuts for Presidential InaugurationJust found out about this one, so it's kind of late.

But you can still get over to your local Krispy Kreme donut shop and pick one free donut of your choice today, to celebrate the Presidential Inauguration.

I salute Krispy Kreme for putting the needs of hungry Americans first on this very patriotic day.

Good marketing promotion, I would add. We like that at the DIFF.

Remembering Jarrett Knyal

Remembering Jarrett KnyalOne year ago today our good friend and coworker Jarrett Knyal died from cancer. I wrote about Jarrett last year (one of the hardest things I've ever written) and started with these words:

I didn't want to write this post. I've known for a few weeks I would have to, but I couldn't even start it.

My coworker and my friend – in fact he was one of the coolest guys I've ever known – died Wednesday afternoon after a long battle with cancer.  He was 44. That's way too young.

Jarrett "Spiderman" Knyal (or Jarrett "Cockroach" Knyal – depending on what day you talked to him) was one of the most inspirational people I've had the pleasure of working with.

It's hard to believe an entire year has passed since those sad times. We all miss Jarrett and think of him often.
