Quicken Loans Security Team has a BBQ to benefit ALS

You know how Clayton wrote about our Walk for ALS the other day? Well, all the teams in the company have been individually hosting events, raffles and essentially stuffing us full of goodies to raise money to benefit ALS. Today our Security Team (who not only protect us physically, but on the interwebz as well) held a little BBQ in the scenic Quicken Loans parking lot at our Livonia HQ.

For just $4, you got a freshly grilled 1/4 lb hot dog, chips and a drink. And since it's still warm out here in Michigan, it felt awesome to nosh on some grilled goodness under the toasty sun. And if you got too warm, I did see some water balloons flying in some sort of game. I was too chicken to investigate.

AND! Massages! What, you say? Seems a waste to spend money on a massage therapist, right? But nooooo! Among the talented individuals here at QL is a Client Relations Specialist named Sarah who moonlights as a certified massage therapist! She got to work by providing 5 minute massages for just $5. Talk about putting your talents to work for a good cause.

Security Team also nabbed some awesome Fatheads to raffle off. It's awesome to see the entire Quicken Loans family band together to do something good. And guess what? Tomorrow, the Marketing Team (including yours truly) is doing a Tailgate Potluck. You heard me – I'm cooking!

Check out these pics of today's Security Team event and stay tuned…I'm sure I'll have more tomorrow from Marketing's ALS potluck. And if you've got a dollar or two to donate, you can do so very easily on our page on the ALS website.

Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day: Free admission to museums!

Taking a hint (okay, she should actually get all the credit for this one) from one of my favorite blogs, The Nifty Thrifty Homemaker, for today's DIFF. Christina wrote a quick post which pretty well explains what you should be doing with yourself this coming Sunday:

Smithsonian is sponsoring free museum day 2009 this Saturday, September 26th. Just print out a museum pass online good for yourself and a guest at any participating museum. Enjoy!

For my fellow Michiganders, there are quite a few places around Metro Detroit that are participating. Even the newly renovated Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit is on the list. So have at it!

And….thanks Christina!

Got a Buck to Help Us Help Those With ALS?

Help Us Support the ALS AssociationQuicken Loans is part of a huge effort to raise money for those suffering from ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and to support research for an eventual cure to this devastating disease.

As part of the Michigan ALS Association's fund raising efforts, Quicken Loans is supporting the 2009 ALS Walk in Detroit. Here's why we care (from the ALS Society's site):

Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that
slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and
breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years
from the time of diagnosis.

Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and
every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this
disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or
socioeconomic boundaries.

This crippling disease can strike anyone. Presently there is no
known cause of the disease though support is bringing researchers
closer to an answer. In the mean time it costs an average of $200,000 a
year to provide the care ALS patients need. Help make a difference and
donate or join a walk today.

Here's where you can help. The ALS Assocation needs your support and a dollar will do. Just go to to the ALS site and give a buck. That's it. If you have 5 bucks to give, that's five times better than one, but one will do.

Help us help those who need our help. Isn't one lousy buck worth it?

Quicken Loans goes camping: the 2009 edition

Remember when my team went camping last year? Well, we did it again. And this time I did not ruin dessert!

This year we went to Ludington State Park on the western coast of Michigan. Since we had planned the trip for mid-September, we expected to freeze our tushies off. Not so. It was 2 days of sunshine so warm we ended up at the beach both days. Yes, Lake Michigan was cold, but for the most part, it was quite refreshing.

We left late Friday morning, stopped for food stuffs and reached our destination late in the afternoon. Now. Here's my one and only gripe – our campsite was a mile away from our cars and toilets/showers. But, it ended up working out pretty well. My feet only hurt a little and no one complained about my stench. :-)

We enjoyed dinner at a local restaurant in downtown Ludington Friday night and headed back for some games & a toasty fire. The next day some people went hiking, some went biking. We all gathered back for dinner cooked by our fearless leaders, Matt and Regis. We played our favorite campfire game – 3 Truths. Everybody writes down 3 things that no one know about them. Then one person reads off the list and everybody gets to guess who that "truth" is about. We learned a lot and had quite a few laughs.

I didn't take as many pictures as last year, but Rebecca was kind enough to send me what she shot from her iPhone. Check 'em out below:

How I Turned 5 Pounds of Sour Grapes into Awesome Jam

Living in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has certain advantages.  For example, we're rated as the "healthiest city" because of the health system and extensive parks. Among these benefits, I continuously hear about the Saturday Marketplace in Kerrytown (the historical district of Ann Arbor).

This is where farmers bring all their produce, eggs, and homemade goods to sell, and I have missed every last one of these for the past 5 years of living in Ann Arbor.  So last Saturday, I was determined to make it just this once and dragged myself there early morning.

Obsessives: Soda Pop & why you may need to reconsider your life goals

I know what you’re thinking. Another video, Kelly? Too easy. GIVE US THE GOOD STUFF! WE NEED THE DIFF!

Well, my people, this is it. Over the weekend, I became more than slightly obsessed with this video from Chow.com. It’s not new, not cutting edge, fancy schmancy technologically-advanced or even celebrity dance-y pants. This video? THIS.VIDEO.IS.PURE.AWESOME.

There are times in life when you come across someone with such a zest for life that it leaves you scratching your head. They’re that happy? Can’t be *that happy* all the time. They leave you questioning their motives or even the source of their unapologetic energy (whatever they’re on can’t be legal).

Oprah kicks off 24th season with largest flash mob ever

Check out this awesome YouTube video from the kickoff of the new Oprah season. I'm not a huge Oprah fan (Mom is though! Hi Mom!), but this is totally amazing.

Essentially, they accomplished what is believed to be the biggest Flash Mob ever. With the help of a Oprah-customized performance from the Black Eyed Peas, thousands of people danced along to the tune. The aerial view is pretty cool. Also? Watch 'til the very end. Apparently, the Big O had no clue this was going to happen.
