How a VA Loan Got Me My First Home – I Loved That House

How VA loans got me this cute homeI'm a veteran.

I'm mentioned that a few times. I wrote about 1st Sgt. Whatshisname a few years back and I've posted a few other times about my two-year stint in the U.S Army.

I learned quite a bit in those two years. And I also got some good benefits out of it. Cash for college was the one I used pretty much right away after I got out.

Then when I decided to buy a home, I used the absolute best benefit of military service and took advantage of the VA loan program.

VA loans are awesome, especially for young folks and first time home buyers (which I was when I bought my home). That's the house in the picture.  A little west side Detroit bungalow. That house was awesome. Built like a tank. Brick exterior, plaster walls, original hardwood flooring, nice-sized backyard, pretty good location (near lots of good suburban Detroit shopping) and even very close to some sizeable woods (not what you'd expect in the Motor City, but I actually saw several deer and coyotes in the area in the 11 years I lived there).

Four Star Service From Botsford Hospital

Linda evans A couple of months ago, one of Quicken Loans own team members, Linda Evans, was told that she needed Gall Bladder surgery. Linda ended up going in for surgery at Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills, MI. She had been to different hospitals in the area before, but she had never been to Botsford Hospital before this surgery.

Linda was surprised at the level of service she received at the hospital. Her surgeon, Dr. S Pastor, always greeted her with a smile on his face or a hug and made certain she didn’t worry about her upcoming surgery. Even after her surgery, her check-ups at the hospital were just as pleasant.

The most surprising part of the service Linda received happened last week on December 21st, months after her surgery took place. Linda received a phone call from a nurse at Botsford Hospital (Jan Shimmel). The nurse was calling to follow up on how Linda was feeling after the surgery, asked if she had any concerns and wished her well.

A big round of applause goes out to Botsford Hospital for taking great care of your clients. In the words of Linda Evans herself, “There is a hospital out there that doesn’t just treat you as a ‘patient’ but as a person and cares about you. Four stars from me.”

Pictured above is Linda Evans.

Jay Farner – Leadership and Personal Productivity Lessons from the CEO of One Reverse Mortgage

Jay Farner CEO One Reverse MortgageJay Farner, CEO of One Reverse Mortgage (One Reverse Mortgage just happens to be a Quicken Loans family company), was recently interviewed by our own Regis Hadiaris on his Dot Connector Blog.

Regis presents a great interview of Jay Farner, with some leadership and personal productivity tips and insight that you won't want to miss. I highly suggest you check it out.

Here's a small sample to wet your beak:

What are the top client service lessons you have learned over the course of your career?

Jay Farner: I think it all starts with a quote Steven Luigi [Piazza, VP at Quicken Loans] always says: “people don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.”

Using that as the basis for Client Service is key.  Beyond that, I believe it’s about:

  1. Asking really good questions
  2. Demonstrating you can find the right solutions
  3. Adjusting your approach to your Clients’ best way of learning
  4. Being open minded to possibilities
  5. Being insanely responsive to your Clients’ needs

Read the rest. You'll be happy you did!

Aruba Jeep Rental Done Right!

Aruba Jeep rental done right! One of the things I love writing about on this blog is great consumer stories.

The examples of when businesses, both small and large get it right and make me want to share.

That's what happened recently on my most awesome 10-day excursion to Aruba (check out the video below and you can see the Jeep!).

We found the best place to rent a jeep in Aruba, Value Aruba Car Rental. Value Aruba Car Rental is a small, family-owned business far off the main track and we only found it because my wife's due diligence in researching out Aruba jeep rental options. Her work paid off and saved us about $300.

That's right. By going with Value Aruba Car Rental, we paid $300 less than the big name brands (you know the ones I'm talking about) for our Jeep for one week. And I'm talking the EXACT same Jeep. The only difference was we paid $300 less than the big names wanted for the weekly rental.

Google donates $20 million to world charities

Google holiday 09
Google is celebrating the 2009 Holiday Season by donating $20 million to charities around the world. I know I’ve pat Google on the back before, but I just see it as giving credit where credit is due. Sure Google is a huge company that I’m sure makes huge profits. And really there are a bunch of other things they could’ve done with this money. But instead of adding to their empire or throwing an epic party, they decided to be The DIFF and do the most good by donating to those in need.

So hats off to Google again. They’ve put their money in the right place and done a world of good in the process.

Detroit Doubletree Hotel welcomes Quicken Loans to Detroit with a treat

December Pictures at Quicken Loans 001 Earlier this week, Quicken Loan team members were greeted in the lobby by 4 members of the the Detroit Doubletree Hotel staff with around 600 freshly baked chocolate chip cookies!

The cookies were a welcoming gift to us at Quicken Loans, who will be
Doubletree's new neighbors when we relocate to downtown Detroit in
spring 2010!

Every Quicken Loans team member was handed a cookie in a Doubletree cookie sleeve and a flyer with more information about Doubletree's lovely downtown Detroit location.

Thanks Doubletree for cookies and satisfying some team members' morning hunger!

Caribou Coffee Keeps it Real

Caribou Coffee Cup Sleeve

Real is always better than fake. And apparently Caribou Coffee agrees. On our most recent after-lunch coffee run, we discovered that they've switched from using chocolate syrup to pieces of real chocolate instead.

Now, I didn't get a chocolate drink myself this time, but my friend did and she gave it rave reviews.

Caribou even took the extra step and gave a little blurb about the switch on the cup sleeves…As if the wonderful chocolatey goodness you're sipping on wasn't enough of a clue.

So good job Caribou, for switching to the real stuff and making your coffee that much better.

Quicken Loans Corporate Headquarters Hosts Frosty Fest 2009

More than 1,500 Quicken Loans team members and their loved ones took to the streets of Detroit on Sunday, December 13, to participate in the companys annual Frosty Fest celebration. The event, which was previously hosted at Quicken Loans' Livonia headquarters, was moved to our future home in Detroit.

Frosty Fest featured complimentary ice skating and skate rental at the Campus Martius rink, live reindeer, a dog sled team, photos with Santa Claus, a craft tent where kids created holiday gifts for their parents and a warming center inside the Compuware building that had snacks, crafts and a Nintendo Wii for families to enjoy. The event was intended to help our team members spend a fun-filled memorable day in our new home city, while also familiarizing themselves with the area and visiting local businesses.

A special thanks to everyone who helped make Frosty Fest 2009 happen. We can't wait until next year!

Ringing of the Bells, Muppet Style

Alright, so who doesn't love the Muppets? My favorite character was always Gonzo, who, regrettably, is not in this video. However, Beaker and Animal are in it and they are pretty cool too. The other character in the video, for those who don’t know the Muppet characters by heart is The Swedish Chef.

Once I saw this video I knew that I had to share it. It brings together childhood memories and the holiday season. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

If this article spurs your interest to see who some of the other characters are in The Muppet Show, like it did me, visit this link.
