Detroit Lives – Johnny Knoxville and Palladium Boots Discover Artistic Creativity in the D

Amber Hunt told me I had to watch it. So I did.

And my first impression of the documentary Detroit Lives was "wow, what a great documentary."

It got me to thinking about Detroit. Life in Detroit. Arts and music in Detroit. And when I watched it again, something struck me.

The film is presented from the perspective that there is a NEW creative energy in Detroit. An energy that is responsible for really cool things and even profitible businesses (such as Phillip Cooley's Slows BBQ). This creative energy is helping spur a rebirth in the city.

That's all fine. Makes sense to me. Except one thing.

The creative energy of Detroit is nothing new.

Verizon Hopeline – Supporting Domestic Violence Shelters

Verizon Hopeline Supports Domestic Violence SheltersGot an email from Taylor Hulyk about a program that seems very much worth mentioning here on our blog.

Verizon Hopeline – a program designed to support domestic voilence shelters.

Here's the info Taylor sent me:

Verizon Wireless’ long-running HopeLine® program collects no-longer-used wireless phones and equipment in any condition from any service provider. The used phones are either refurbished or recycled. With the funds raised from the sale of the refurbished phones, Verizon Wireless donates wireless phones and airtime to survivors, and provides funding and other contributions to non-profit domestic violence shelters and prevention programs across the country.

Eyewriter Art – Improving the lives of those living with ALS

Eyewriter Commonly referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, gradually inhibiting the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement. Patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. An average of 15 people each day are diagnosed in the US, with 30,000 Americans having the disease at any given time.

Every year at Quicken Loans we have a fund raiser to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the ALS Association. We are very proud to support their mission to lead the fight to treat and cure ALS, and help empower people with ALS to live fuller lives  by providing them with compassionate care and support.

Today my friend showed me one example of just how ALS patients' lives can be enhanced. Since ALS affects only motor neuronssight (as well as touch, hearing tast and smell) is not affected. Enter the Eyewriter. Check out this Eyewriter project developed in conjunction with Tony TEMPT1, an artist, publisher and social-activist based in Los Angeles who was diagnosed with ALS, which enables him to not only communicate with his eyes, but also to continue his artistic self-expression.

Tempt From the article in Laughing Squid:

"TEMPT1 teamed up with a group of artists and hackers from the Graffiti Research Lab, OpenFrameworks and Free Art and Technology communities to develop free and open source eye tracking and drawing software that has helped him make art again for the first time since being hospitalized."

Imagine if we could provide this technology to all those who are suffering with ALS, to enable them to continue to express themselves as their disease progresses.

Please consider helping the ALS association to use technology to not only enhance the lives of those with ALS, but to find the cure. We've made giving simple with our week-long fund drive, Tweet for ALS, enabling people to donate through Facebook and Twitter. From September 20 through September 26, we’re asking everyone we know to give what they can to help - even if it's just a dollar- and spread the word. Together, we can defeat ALS.

“Tweet for ALS” Needs Your Help Now!

9-8-2010 1-28-51 PM

Along with the Walk to Defeat ALS, Quicken Loans is raising money through a project called "Tweet for ALS." No, you don't have to have a Twitter account to take part either! “Tweet for ALS” is a way to use social media to drive awareness and participation to raise money for ALS. (Lou Gehrig ’s Disease)

With today’s popularity of social networking and with the help of social media users everywhere to spread the word, our goal is to raise $70,000 in 7 days. We’re feeling quite ambitious this year, because we’ve set the goal higher and challenged everyone to join our team in helping us reach it.

The concept is simple:

1.) 7 days (Sept 20-26)
2.) Goal: $70,000 for research & medical support for ALS
3.) Donate, Tweet, Share
4.) Win cool Prizes
5.) Help change people’s lives

By creating a project on Crowdrise.com, we’ve made it incredibly fast and easy for everyone to get involved.  Anyone can go to “Tweet for ALS” to donate and share with their family and friends right now.

When you make a donation to “Tweet for ALS” this week, you will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win cool prizes. Some of the giveaways include iPod Nanos, Flip Cams, Detroit Pistons “Honorary Ball Kid” certificate, Detroit Red Wings Chris Drapper signed hockey stick and tickets to the first Cleveland vs. Miami game of the season.

Although the time period to donate and be entered into the drawing ends September 26, "Tweet for ALS" will still accept donations when the "giveaway" week is over. If you want to be a part of using social media for social good, this is the perfect opportunity for you to get involved!

Happy Constitution Day!

The diversity of our country is one of our greatest strengths. No matter where you’re from, you can become an American citizen.

Some of our most successful business leaders are naturalized citizens. They are just a few of the millions of people that have left their native land for a better life. And America is better because of it.

For those of us that were born here, it’s easy to forget how lucky we are to enjoy the freedoms we have. Remind yourself today.

Remembering September 11th

Do you remember where you were September 11th?

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 9 years since nearly
3,000 Americans and people from 70 other countries lost their lives in the
largest terrorist attack on American soil. The tragedy affects our lives to this
very day.

Whatever your political outlook, we can all unite to honor those who
perished that fateful morning. Take a moment to remember all we have lost, and
be thankful for all we have gained. Thank you.
