US Cellular Project and GM Countdown2Drive
Thursday, December 23, 2010Got some tips from my boy Charlie K. over at MS&L Digital. Here they are:
U.S. Cellular
Last week, U.S. Cellular kicked off its “All Phones Free” Sale.
Through Dec. 24, the recently named “best wireless carrier in the country” by a Consumer Reports survey is offering its extensive lineup of cutting edge phones free while supplies last, including the latest Android-powered smartphones. U.S. Cellular is also topping it off with a $100 credit to new customers purchasing a smartphone or existing customers adding a new smartphone line. All devices are backed by U.S. Cellular’s high-speed nationwide network and the valuable benefits of The Belief Project, which include faster phone upgrades, overage cap, discounts for autopay and paperless billing, and “no contract after the first.” More about it here:

GM
I’m writing on behalf of General Motors to let you know about the new Countdown2Drive initiative. The ultimate goal of this web-based program is to reduce teen crashes by preparing them to be good passengers.
C2D wants to raise awareness of the parent-teen Passenger Agreement. You can check it out at www.countdown2Drive.org
Users can use the web tool to establish family rules and guidelines for driving.

Lunar Eclipse + Winter Solstice = Mindfreak
Tuesday, December 21, 2010So, last night was the lunar eclipse. Eclipses of any kind are totally awesome. I remember being a youth and witnessing my first solar eclipse. I grew up in the era of “be back before the streetlights come on” so all the kids were roaming the streets, unmonitored by any adults, screaming “DON’T LOOK INTO THE SUN!” And then, of course, we all looked directly into the sun. Explains a lot…
Anyhoo, last night’s lunar eclipse started at 1:33am ET. Unless I am singing karaoke, I am rarely awake at 1:33am ET. So, I missed it. However, I caught this amazing time lapse video that shows just how sweet the lunar eclipse was:

Washington DC Humane Society Gives a Holiday to the Forgotten Dogs
Friday, December 17, 2010
It’s the kind of story that gives me hope for humanity.
Adam Parascandola, a former humane officer with the Washington D.C. Humane Society, was troubled 10 years ago when he would come across guard dogs, often mistreated at worst and alone and forgotten at best, around the holiday season. So he began a program to visit them and bring them treats and toys. Here’s some info from the HumaneSociety.org’s website:
Among the more forlorn sights around the nation’s capital are dozens of guard dogs who do not know it’s Christmastime at all. For them, it’s just another day tethered in a rocky lot or patrolling a chain-link fence for intruders—or so it was until, more than 10 years ago, a humane officer from the Washington Humane Society decided to play Santa.
While making his rounds, Adam Parascandola was touched by the plight of the city’s guard dogs. Now the director of animal cruelty issues for The HSUS, Parascandola saw them as the loneliest of animals. “Most of them are really sweet, and they just want attention,” he says.
He began to take toys and treats to them, eventually making the practice an official shelter program during the holidays. With no kids of his own, he tried to work on Christmas Day so officers with families could stay home. The timing of the deliveries was both symbolic and practical: Few people were around, allowing him to check on the dogs’ health and well-being without getting into an argument with their sometimes less-than-friendly owners.
Very heartwarming and very cool. When Parascandola left for another job in California, other human officers joined in and continued his efforts.
It’s great to read stories like this. Like I said, it gives me hope.

Foodsurge: Healthy Fast Food, From Detroit with Love!
Tuesday, December 14, 2010
The challenge – come up with a concept that can change the way we eat.
We still live in the same fast-paced society, we still have things to do that prevent us from taking the time to cook like we should, but how can we incentivize the system to bring healthier choices to the fast food space? How can we have REAL food, fast? Not just crappy fast food?
Enter the Beet Squad, one of several teams from accross the country with a dream to and a plan to do just that. The Beet Squad came up with a concept called Foodsurge that uses online crowdsourcing (similar to Groupon) to hook up the people who desire healthy food fast with the producers who desire to bring it to them. Using online connections, would-be eaters vote to signify their willingness to buy, and preparers prepare the fast, to-go, healthy items, based on a tipping point of minimum votes.
Great idea! But this will take money and support.
Enter Yoxi.tv. Yoxi will give marketing support and money to the winner of the competition.
Right now, Beet Squad/Foodsurge is one of two final contestants. And today is the last day to vote.
Beet Squad is an amazing example of Detroit ingenuity and the pioneering spirit that is infusing the city, especially around the foodie community with cool ideas like urban-garden supplied restaurants and travelling produce vending trucks. Help provide healthy options by helping the Beet Squad and Foodsurge win this thing!

John Lennon’s Last Interview 30 Years Ago Today
Wednesday, December 08, 2010I can’t believe it’s been 30 years. 30 years since public nutjob-looking-to-make-a-name-for-himself #1, Mark David Chapman, shot John Lennon.
I remember reading the paper the next day with my friend Ian. We were both paper boys for the Detroit Free Press and did our routes at 6 am in those days. We sat in the bitter cold at our paper drop, reading and not believing it. After my route, I went home and my brother (who’s a huge Beatles fan) was distraught and listening to Howard Stern on the radio (Stern was a local Detroit DJ back then). It’s all so vivid. I can’t believe it’s been 30 years wow.
I came across this interview today. It’s Lennon’s last interview, just a short time before his death. Recently I watched a very good documentary on Phil Spector. Spector said that he wasn’t completely surprised that Lennon was murdered. Lennon refused to have security and absolutely insisted he live life as a normal person. Unfortunately, that ultimately cost him his life.
One last thing before the video. Here’s a page on BBC.com that is the actual reporting from that dark day three long decades ago. It’s pretty interesting.
One of the greatest of all time. One of my favorites. I even went to Abbey Road when I was in England a few years back and took that famous picture. It was a little scary. Cars were whizzing by and we had to walk across the road and avoid being hit.
Damn you Chapman. Why did you do it? So much more music was supposed to happen. So much more.
