ABC’s primetime show Detroit 1-8-7 is backed into a corner and taking more blows than Sonny Liston in a Muhammad Ali fight. With ratings down, the show is in danger of being canned after only its first season. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder is also pulling the plug on film tax credits in an effort to balance the state’s budget.

Detroit 1-8-7 has helped spotlight the city and showcased its humanity and spirit. The show gives viewers the real Detroit, the good and the bad.

If you’re a fan of the show, or just want to help a good cause, contact ABC and let them know the positive buzz Detroit 1-8-7 brings to the city. Direct your plea to Paul Lee, president of ABC entertainment. Please be polite, concise, and tell them you are not a happy camper!

Remembering September 11th

Do you remember where you were September 11th?

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 9 years since nearly
3,000 Americans and people from 70 other countries lost their lives in the
largest terrorist attack on American soil. The tragedy affects our lives to this
very day.

Whatever your political outlook, we can all unite to honor those who
perished that fateful morning. Take a moment to remember all we have lost, and
be thankful for all we have gained. Thank you.

Hasselhoff a Hot Mess in Dancing with the Stars

I’m a huge Dancing with the Stars fan. So when I heard that “The Hoff” was making his debut on the show, I suddenly got the urge to drunkenly eat a cheeseburger off my bathroom floor!

The Hoff is really an American icon. He’s a symbol of how our lives can become a complete train wreck in a few short years. I really do hope he stays healthy and makes it far into the tournament. Because if he doesn’t, I’ll have to root for The Situation. Gym, tan, laundry baby!

Plant a Tree Without Leaving Your Home!

Green is good. But for most of us, we've got too much going on to really help the environment. Well, there’s good news. With the help of the Odwalla juice company, you can now make a difference from the comfort of your own home!

Odwalla is sponsoring its popular “Plant a Tree” contest, making it possible for states to buy new trees for their state parks and recreation areas.  For every Michigan vote received, Odwalla will donate $1 toward tree purchases for Michigan.  There is no contribution required.  According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Michigan received more than $50,000 from Odwalla in 2009. 

So go check it out, pick your state of choice and plant a tree. The voting continues through August 15, 2010 or until 175,000 total trees are donated in the U.S.

If you followed wrestling in the 90’s you remember Razor Ramon, the stylish Cuban-American bully from the World Wrestling Federation. Quicken Loans is lucky enough to have a Razor Ramon look-alike, our very own Diff team leader Clay Closson! His dashing good looks and bad-boy demeanor intimidate anyone who crosses his path (so watch out). If the mortgage business doesn’t work out for him, I’m sure Clay could find work doing body slams off the top ropes of the wrestling ring!

Dan Gilbert’s Big Move Featured in Detroit News

As a native Detroiter I love seeing good news about the Motor City. Detroit has taken its fair share of knocks lately, but Dan Gilbert’s decision to move Quicken Loans downtown has infused some hope into those who love the city. Quicken Loans’ story was featured in today’s Detroit News, framing a positive outlook for the company and its new hometown.

Fulfilling his promise to move Quicken Loans and associated businesses downtown, Gilbert is pushing against much of mainstream thought that Detroit is too far gone to be welcoming environment for any corporation. And for those that know Gilbert, he is all about keeping his word.

The Ugly Side of the Beautiful Game

Soccer was thrust back into the national spotlight this summer as the World Cup had millions glued to their TV’s in hopes Team USA would make its mark on the world stage. With the whole nation watching, the tournament reminded Americans why they still can’t stand soccer.

Seldom we saw a match not tarnished by bad calls and disallowed goals. Games were plagued by a slew of players diving and faking injury so convincingly they deserved an Oscar.

Bizdom U Featured in New York Times

In the New York Times article, Fostering Entrepreneurs, and Trying to Revive a City, writer Pamela Ryckman focuses on the startup companies Bizdom U has helped launch and its goal of growing Detroit’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

“Bizdom U operates on the principle that entrepreneurs are born, not made,” writes Ryckman. “Its program leaders do not necessarily believe entrepreneurship can be taught. Instead, an essential part of Bizdom U’s job is to unearth candidates with a distinct combination of vision, ambition, drive and risk tolerance, and then mold them into business owners.”
