“Tweet for ALS” Needs Your Help Now!

9-8-2010 1-28-51 PM

Along with the Walk to Defeat ALS, Quicken Loans is raising money through a project called "Tweet for ALS." No, you don't have to have a Twitter account to take part either! “Tweet for ALS” is a way to use social media to drive awareness and participation to raise money for ALS. (Lou Gehrig ’s Disease)

With today’s popularity of social networking and with the help of social media users everywhere to spread the word, our goal is to raise $70,000 in 7 days. We’re feeling quite ambitious this year, because we’ve set the goal higher and challenged everyone to join our team in helping us reach it.

The concept is simple:

1.) 7 days (Sept 20-26)
2.) Goal: $70,000 for research & medical support for ALS
3.) Donate, Tweet, Share
4.) Win cool Prizes
5.) Help change people’s lives

By creating a project on Crowdrise.com, we’ve made it incredibly fast and easy for everyone to get involved.  Anyone can go to “Tweet for ALS” to donate and share with their family and friends right now.

When you make a donation to “Tweet for ALS” this week, you will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win cool prizes. Some of the giveaways include iPod Nanos, Flip Cams, Detroit Pistons “Honorary Ball Kid” certificate, Detroit Red Wings Chris Drapper signed hockey stick and tickets to the first Cleveland vs. Miami game of the season.

Although the time period to donate and be entered into the drawing ends September 26, "Tweet for ALS" will still accept donations when the "giveaway" week is over. If you want to be a part of using social media for social good, this is the perfect opportunity for you to get involved!

Quicken Loans Celebrates One Million Closed Loans by Paying Off a Client’s Loan With the Thanks A Million Campaign

Quicken Loans Thanks A Million for closing a million loans. We're paying off a mortgage earlyWe're closing in on a million loans and that's something we think is worth celebrating.

It's such a big deal to us that we're going to recognize the millionth closed loan by paying off one lucky client's loan. That's right. We're going to pick a Quicken Loans client who closes between now and December 31, 2010 and we're going to pay off their loan. They close a loan with us and then we pay it off.

Wow! I want that deal. Wait, I can't. I work here. I don't qualify.

But you do! All you have to do is refinance or buy a home and we might pay off your loan.

So how did we get to one million loans? It all started back in 1985 when Dan Gilbert and few of his friends founded Rock Financial. One thing lead to another and Rock Financial became Quicken Loans.

Things went well over the years and today the company that Gilbert and his friends started 25 years ago is now the nation's largest retail online lender and among the top five overall retail lenders. Last year we closed about $25 billion in loans and we're on track to top that this year.

A Penny Saved is a Penny on Ebates.com

Ebates Recently I was ordering something online with one of my friends and before she went to place the order I asked if she went through her ebates account. She looked at me dazed and confused not knowing what I was talking about. I could not believe that she had never heard of ebates before. I informed her immediately and referred her to the site.

If you have never heard of them before, ebates is a site that will give you a certain percentage of your online purchase back to you with no hidden fees or charges in a “big fat check” quarterly. For example if you purchase something from Macy’s online they will give you 6.0% cash back and sometimes they even have free shipping added onto your purchase.  This may not seem like a lot but since 2008 I have received $73.91 back from them in a check with all my online purchases, and since I am such a bargain shopper this is a lot to me! During the holidays they run specials of double cash back and the percentage of cash back can be up to 20% to many popular stores.

They have over a 1,000 stores, services and websites listed on their site that will give you cash back. Some examples are: Netflix, Target, AT&T and Verizon, and ebay.

Check out their site at www.ebates.com and if you refer a friend you get $5 added onto your “big fat check” after a purchase if made from your friend. I absolutely love this site and every time I make an online purchase I start off with making sure I can get an ebates reward!

Having a Moving Sale?

Garage Sale Tracker Guest Post on the Quicken Loans BlogBy: Rich from Garage Sale Tracker

It's summer time and the house just sold! Now it is time to pack up all your stuff and move into the new house before summer ends and school starts back up. The best thing to do is to clear out the clutter in the house via a moving sale, so that you are not bringing new stagnant items into the house that will just become stale.

The following are some helpful tips for holding a moving sale:

A Garage Sale Pessimist Turned Optimist

47a0db30b3127cce9854ab0822c000000045108EbNmLhuxbm[1]So how many people hate the idea of garage/rummage sales? And think that they are a place where junk is found or hoarders go?!

I absolutely USED to.  About 2 weeks ago, before I started my internship here at Quicken, I was visiting my thirty-one year old sister in St. Joseph, Michigan on the west side of the state. I went to visit her on my way home to my parent’s house in Farmington Hills.

After staying the night she decided to wake me up bright and early, for what I thought was a trip to drop off my four year old niece at preschool. Little did I know that we were going “garage sale-ing,” as she calls it, for three hours after we dropped off my niece.  At first, I was angry with my sister because I was out a little too late the night before and all I could think about was jumping in the guest room bed and taking a nap before my “diva-licious” niece came home and I was going to be asked to play all afternoon.

My New Keeshond Puppy

Me and puppy After waiting for 8 weeks for my puppy to be old enough to fly, last Friday, I finally picked her up from the airport. I was excited to see her after waiting for so long. She was flown to my boyfriend and me from a Keeshond breeder in Tennessee, Nancy Hopkins.

Nancy was amazing! She checked in every step of the way and walk me through the entire process. She never complained when I asked for pictures or when I consistently emailed her to make sure the puppy was doing okay. She even sent me a video of the puppy so that I could watch her play with her siblings. When I picked the puppy up from the airport, her crate was nicely set up with a drinking cup stabilized inside for the puppy’s use, a bag of food attached to the roof of the crate for us to feed her with, and a cute stuffed bunny was inside for her to draw comfort from and entertain herself. Nancy had even made sure to attach all the puppy’s vet papers and additional information to the outside of the crate. The night we picked our puppy up Nancy called to make sure that everything went okay and the she arrived safely.

The puppy, which we consequently named Griffey (although she is a girl), was named after my boyfriends favorite baseball player Ken Griffey Jr. To our satisfaction, our other dog, a Golden Retriever named Kenze, is absolutely in love with her and they play constantly every day. I would recommend anyone looking for a Keeshond to get in contact with Nancy Hopkins by emailing her at Hopkins_Nancy@yahoo.com.

Biggby Birthday Love – Free Coffee!

BiggbySo there are coffee shops, and then there's Biggby. Why is Biggby better? Let me count the ways:

  1. They're a Michigan-based company (I love to give business to my fellow Michiganders).
  2. They have a fantastic understanding of what it means to provide stellar customer service – evident in their company culture and the way they reach out to clients via social media like twitter and facebook.
  3. Our CMO Stu Davis is a devout Biggby drinker, thanks to their fantastic customer service (see #2 and this).
  4. Because Biggby Bob, the CEO of Biggby, is a cool guy and an innovative, hands-on entrepreneur.
  5. They are the fastest growing coffee franchise in the Midwest, in an economic climate where many businesses are struggling – which proves they are doing something right!
  6. Their website rocks.
  7. They have super yum coffee drinks.

Are you convinced yet? No?

Then how about this? They are giving away a FREE specialty beverage -  today only – in honor of their 15th birthday!

Now who gives OTHERS a gift on their own birthday? (I told you they were special!)

Happy Birthday, Biggby! Raising my cup to you!
