Need an excuse to celebrate a Monday? Today marks the 75th anniversary of the Bloody Mary, so mix up a batch of everyone's favorite brunch cocktail and celebrate, like the revelers today in Times Square who happily participated in todays official Bloody Mary Toast.

According to the New York Post, the Bloody Mary was invented by Fernand Petiot in the 1920s in Paris. But it wasn't until Petiot moved to New York and started working St. Regis Hotel in the 1930s that his invention reached perfection with the addition of Tabasco.

Throughout the US you'll see plenty of variations on the Bloody Mary, which has become a favorite breakfast cocktail and hangover cure due to the fortunate inclusion of Vitamin C-rich tomato juice.

I've had a lot of Bloody's in my time. While living in New Orleans I developed a taste for Lafitte's Spicy Bloody Mary, spiked with a generous dollop of horseradish and garnished with a crunchy picked green bean. During my time in Seattle I got turned on to the Bloody Caesar - a Bloody Mary with Clamato and often garnished with a boiled shrimp. (Better than it sounds! Trust me!)

Whether you add worschetershire, chili paste, radishes, or Kosher salt, take time today to toast the birthday of what might be what be the healthiest thing to ever happen to vodka.

I've seen some blogs saying it's a tiny amount and a scam and not to support Starbucks, but I think anything that can help people with AIDS and fund a cure is a good thing.

So thank you Starbucks and I urge the bloggers telling folks not to support Starbucks to stop hating.

World AIDS Day is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. It is common to hold memorials to honor persons who have died from HIV/AIDS on this day.

From Wikipedia about World AIDS Day:

World AIDS Day was the brainchild of Jonathan Mann, director of the Global Programme on AIDS (GPA) at the World Health Organization (WHO). The concept of a World AIDS Day was supported at the 1988 World Summit of Ministers of Health on Programmes for AIDS Prevention and by the Fourth International AIDS Conference in 1988. WHO declared December 1, 1988 as the first World AIDS Day. The United Nations General Assembly formally recognized the event in October 1988. Since then, the event has been taken up by governments, international organizations and charities around the world.

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) became operational in 1996, and it took over the planning and promotion of World AIDS Day. Rather than focus on a single day, UNAIDS created the World AIDS Campaign in 1997 to focus on year-round communications, prevention and education.

In its first two years, the theme of World AIDS Day focused on children and young people. These themes were strongly criticized at the time for ignoring the fact that people of all ages may become infected with HIV and suffer from AIDS.But the themes drew attention to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, helped alleviate some of the stigma surrounding the disease, and helped boost recognition of the problem as a family disease.

In 2004, the World AIDS Campaign became an independent organization.

You can learn more on the US Gov's site for World AIDS Day. And please donate if you've got a few extra dollars or stop by a Starbucks or any other business that supports World AIDS Day.

It deals with two tightly intertwined concepts: Cause and effect, or in this case, effect, then cause.

On this Thanksgiving night, we are reading headlines about the second consecutive evening of terrorist attacks in Mumbai; over 125 are already dead, with hundreds of others wounded. Over ten million people in our own country are jobless, and at least 3.5 million more are homeless. We've undoubtedly entered a recession; banks and large corporations are plunging like dominoes, and global economies are in peril. Things are largely expected to become worse before they get better. This Thanksgiving, it may seem there is little to be thankful for.

This is where the "effect" part comes in. Even in our darkest, most dismal hours, we are able to see light and find hope—if we're willing to look hard enough. No, I'm not talking about that bright spot you may have in your day tomorrow if you're so fortunate (and daring) to score a 50-inch-television for $700 at the Super Jumbo Mart (that's determination and a bit of naivety—that same TV will probably crop up for $650 the weekend before Christmas, so hold your horses for now). I'm talking about that peculiar little seed inside each of us that gives us the ability to find something positive in every person, in every day, no matter how dark the clouds hovering above. Even during our darkest moments, there is some light to be found, it's just ours for the finding. Maybe it's as simple as a glimmer of sunshine peeking through the clouds on a winter morning—maybe it's even less obvious than that, but it's there…keep looking.

Bringing ourselves to overcome the negative (and there seems to be a lot of it these days) is not a solo mission. The strongest, most influential people have values instilled in them by strong and influential parents, teachers and mentors—good leaders make other people into good leaders. This is where that "cause" part of this post comes in. Just short of two weeks ago, my good friend Clayton (THE DIFF M.C.) lost his father, Bob, to cancer. Prior to his passing, I had only met and spoke with Bob once. I was always pretty sure Clayton was the most passionate human being I would ever meet in my life—that was until I met Clayton's dad. Our first and only encounter was following a performance of "Smokey Joe's Café" by The Park Players in Detroit (Bob was a 30+ year veteran of community theatre).

Bob was ecstatic about the play, and Clayton's performance (Clayton is a theatre veteran himself). It was refreshing to see someone have so much passion for life and the theatre, and to have so much pride in his son. It immediately became apparent that his father instilled the passion that Clayton has for life, and his undying dedication to the things he believes in, in him.

Bob worked as a schoolteacher for many years, but it's clear that he was a great teacher and mentor inside, and outside the classroom. Two days ago I attended Bob's memorial service, held at the community center where he had performed and produced theatre for so many years. Behind that same building was where Clayton played baseball and soccer as a young boy. The stage in that building was Bob's stage. That building was everything that he was: Gracefully aged, full of wisdom and endless stories, and love. Bob saw the best in people, and in life. Bob was the "cause" that affected so many peoples' lives; made apparent by a building filled beyond capacity by hundreds of people he had touched in some way.

If you're having a difficult time thinking of something to be thankful for tonight, be thankful for people like Bob—the dreamers, the passionate ones, the people who realize if you want to see the rainbow, you're going to have to weather the rain. They're out there, and we can all learn from them—if we try hard enough, and look deeply enough, we can be just like them.

My condolences go out to Bob's wife Marcia, Jude, Mary and Clayton, who lost their father, and his four grandchildren who lost their "Pappy". Bob may have moved on from this earth, but the lessons and passion he instilled in the hundreds, if not thousands of lives he touched will never be lost. In this hour of darkness, we will mourn and be sad, but we will also see that glimmer of light as we realize Bob will live on in our memories and hearts forever.

I found this sweet piece of news from one of my favorite money-wise bloggers, The Nifty-Thrifty Homemaker. Sounds like Ebay has got quite the scavenger hunt going on! From Christina:

Ebay is hosting $1 holiday doorbusters for 15 days. (November 24 - December 8) Every day, several certain tems are listed on ebay as Buy It Now for $1 with free shipping. There are items such as TV's, Nintendo Wii's, DVD's, even a jet ski!

The catch? The listings are hidden. You have to search ebay in order to find these great deals. And it's not as easy as it sounds. During the day, at random times, the doorbuster items will be listed. You have to find it, and grab it before someone else does! I started playing yesterday, and so far have seen 6 of the doorbuster deals. Unfortunately, you can only win one doorbuster during the entire promo, so I have been trying not to waste it on something I only "kind of" want.

Now, each day, 3 types of doorbusters are available; two items (with a certain number of each available - today it's a Dooney & Burke wallet and a high-end fragrance) and a grand prize. The first day, this was a $1700 TV; the second, it was an $8,000 jet-ski; and today it is a $5,650 mansion playhouse. There are only one of these available per day. (By the way, if you win a prize valued over $600, you must fill out an IRS 1099.)

If you don't feel like searching, you can enter the sweepstakes to win the daily prizes. All of the info can be found here.
