Mitt Romney Visits Bizdom U and Detroit

Mitt Romney Visits Bizdom U and DetroitIt was an exciting morning for Bizdom U, which was visited by former Massachusetts Governor and Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney.

Romney stopped by Bizdom as part of sweep through Michigan to address the media and sit down to chat with some of the Bizdom entrepreneurs.

During a roundtable discussion, entrepreneurs gave a brief presentation about their businesses, asked questions and received suggestions from Romney, a former venture capitalist. He even asked new Bizdom U company Picket Report for some info about the neighborhood surrounding 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., Washington D.C., the home he is hoping to relocate to.

Romney also spoke about the state of Michigan and noted that it is organizations like job-producing Bizdom U that will truly make a positive impact on our economy.

Bizdom U Featured in New York Times

In the New York Times article, Fostering Entrepreneurs, and Trying to Revive a City, writer Pamela Ryckman focuses on the startup companies Bizdom U has helped launch and its goal of growing Detroit’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

“Bizdom U operates on the principle that entrepreneurs are born, not made,” writes Ryckman. “Its program leaders do not necessarily believe entrepreneurship can be taught. Instead, an essential part of Bizdom U’s job is to unearth candidates with a distinct combination of vision, ambition, drive and risk tolerance, and then mold them into business owners.”

Bizdom Biz Feature: Launch Learning Group

Welcome to the Quicken Loans family, Launch Learning Group!Welcome to what we hope is the first of many posts to feature the launch of a new Bizdom U business. For those who don't know, Bizdom U is an entrepreneurial school in downtown Detroit from Quicken Loans Chairman Dan Gilbert.

You might remember us mentioning Guffly before – they're another Bizdom business which is about 6 months old.

So, without further ado, here is the first pitch to you, our dear DIFF readers from one of the newest Bizdom grads – Roger Williams of Launch Learning Group:

In these economic hard times chances are you know someone out of work or looking for a new career path. If so, a career in insurance may be right for them.  There is an unlimited income potential, flexible hours and it’s an industry that is still growing even in this economy.

To assist people in breaking into the insurance industry, my partner Antonella Solomon and I just launched our business out of Bizdom U to help prospective insurance agents acquire their license by training them to pass the State exam on the first try.  Our business, Launch Learning Group, has a new training model and we have broken the old mold of insurance training which is typically traditional, lecture based and boring.

Guffly: Good Stuff for Good Living

Guffly.com launches - Guffly is a one product per day online store and community featuring eco friendly productsQuicken Loans is proud to announce the launch of Guffly.com – one of the brightest and boldest businesses from our Bizdom U students.

(If you're all, "Hold up, what's Bizdom U?" go learn more about the Detroit school for entrepreneurs from Quicken Loans Chairman Dan Gilbert here.)

Here is more about Guffly from their press release:

Guffly founders, Jordan Contreras and Chanell Scott, are graduates of
Bizdom U, the Detroit based entrepreneurial academy founded by Dan
Gilbert. In February 2008, Contreras and Scott began an eco-friendly
blog and quickly garnered a following of hip, eco-friendly consumers
with a conscious. Through listening to their audience and other
research, they discovered that while the eco-friendly product market is
growing, many items are not appealing to the young, stylish, and urban
demographic – Guffly plans to change this. Each day, Guffly will
feature a new stylish, eco-friendly product. During that time, visitors
to the site can view the product, read comments about it, talk about
it, and buy it.

"We have created an online store and community where it is easy for
people to find eco-friendly products that actually look cool and fit
into a modern lifestyle," says Scott, Guffly's CEO. "We have created
relationships with people that create simply amazing eco-friendly
products that we are excited to bring to the daily lives of the modern
user."

To reduce its environmental impact and provide fast service to
customers, Guffly uses drop shipping directly from suppliers. This
concept is integral to a green business model and offers lower shipping
costs, which benefit the customer, and reduces carbon dioxide
emissions, which benefits the environment. Additionally, Guffly checks
all suppliers to ensure their eco-friendly products are truly green,
sustainable, or fair trade.

Totally the DIFF, right? We think so too. So go check them out (everyday if you can, there's something spankin' new all the time!) and not only will you be more environmentally-friendly, you'll be stylish and trendy as well.
