Detroit Pistons and Quicken Loans telethon to aid 400 families

Qucken Loans donates to the Detroit Pistons TelethonYesterday I reported on bad news regarding the economy in our (metro Detroit) area.  Today, I've got good news.

Quicken Loans/Rock Financial is joining with the Detroit Pistons to help 400 Detroit families with food and personal supplies to help deal with the upcoming winter (rumor is it's gonna be a cold one).

Here's the story from today's Detroit Free Press:

The Detroit Pistons organization, with help from Fathead and Rock Financial, is to distribute a truckload of supplies to 400 families in need from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Robbie Parker Elementary School.

The volunteers, including local youth groups, are to distribute 25-pound boxes of food and personal care items to families from Childhelp Michigan.

Funding for the food and supplies came from the Pistons Care Telethon, a 17-hour event held in March at the Palace of Auburn Hills. The event raised more than $450,000.

Quicken Loans/Rock Financial donated 400 backpacks for the children of the families selected to receive support. Fathead, headquartered in Livonia, makes life-size wall graphics.

With so much bad news lately, it's nice to be associated with something good.

Quicken Loans Marketing Team volunteers at Rock Financial Junior Achievement Park in Detroit

By Jen Whiteaker

Most of us know the real world isn’t all fun and games.  But the other day, some of us on the Quicken Loans Marketing Team were able to help show a group of students from Pontiac Northern High School how true that statement really is.

Four of us decided to give back to the community and volunteer at the Rock Financial Junior Achievement Finance Park in Detroit. Honestly, we went down not knowing what we would be doing or what the day would be like and were pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be a lesson for us, too.

The Junior Achievement (JA) Finance Park is set up to give students a "real life" simulation about personal finance.  This isn’t your ordinary field trip.  The teachers are given a curriculum to incorporate into their classrooms weeks before they arrive at the park and the simulation is the capstone of that curriculum.

The Quicken Loans Difference – Tours, Diversity and Blogs

The DIFF has a new partner blog - The Community DIFF from Quicken Loans! by whatsthediffblog, on Flickr

I moved from Michigan to South Carolina last year. While my family is dealing with the usual adjustment issues, I’m also confronted with lots of stereotypes – Yankees, Southerners, dialects, and who eats what. It’s been an experience with a lot of surprises. I’m really enjoying watching all these nasty assumptions fall apart. Really, it’s for the best that they do.

According to Infoplease.com:

It took 15 years to create the federal Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday. Congressman John Conyers, Democrat from Michigan, first introduced legislation for a commemorative holiday four days after King was assassinated in 1968.

Michigan. Yeah. That makes me proud.

What makes me not-so-proud:

2005: South Carolina becomes the last state to make MLK Day a paid holiday for all state employees. Until now, employees could choose between celebrating it or one of three Confederate-related holidays.

We’re moving downtown: Quicken Loans and Detroit 2.0

Quicken Loans is moving to Detroit!

A press conference for Dan Gilbert with Governor Granholm and then Diff-Master Clayton Closson is in the newspaper? Something big is going on at Quicken Loans.

Though it will likely be a few years before we pack up in Livonia and start cruising down Woodward, today was an incredibly exciting day for all of us at Quicken Loans and for the great city of Detroit. It was confirmed that the months of speculation were right – we are headed downtown.

As a young career person, I couldn’t be more excited to think about the opportunities Detroit will bring me and other Quicken Loans team members. As a life-long Michigander, I’m ecstatic that Detroit is on the road to revival.

Happy Birthday Rock Financial JA Park!

Rock Financial Junior Achievement Park

I consider myself somewhat financially savvy for a twenty something person. I’m not a pecuniary guru like my father, but I’ve got a 401k and little debt to my name outside of my vehicle. My Dad is smart though, man. Through years of thriftiness and wise investment moves, he’s set him and my mom up for retirement and allowed them to consistently bug me about what I’m saving. He’s my version of the
Rock Financial Junior Achievement Park.

Today marks the 1 year anniversary of the park. The JA Park has instilled sound personal budgeting and money management skills into the minds of nearly 3,000 students during its first year.
