What's The Diff?

The things Quicken Loans team members care about and want to share with the world

First Impressions Really Are Lasting Impressions

By Jennifer Palmer

When you apply for a position through a career Web site are you prepared for that first phone call?  Have you done your research on the company Web site?  Do you know what position you are applying for?  Have you done research on the position you are applying for through that specific company?  These are all important questions to ask yourself before you click “submit” on the company Web site.

When the first phone call comes in from a recruiter you should be prepared to answer a set of general screening questions.  Here are some key things to do to prepare yourself before you receive that first phone call:

  • Always have a copy of your resume handy. Most recruiters will want to review a few key points on your resume.
  • Know what position you applied for with each company.
  • Do as much research ahead of time on the position as well as the company through the company Web site.
  • Always act enthusiastic starting with the first phone call since that is the point you are being evaluated. If it is not a good time for you to make that lasting impression, schedule a time for the recruiter to call you back.

In other words, be prepared! This will make you stand out amongst the hundreds of other candidates that may be applying for that same position.

  1. The thing that puzzles me is, why does it take so long for recruiters to contact you? Of course, I realize they only contact potential candidates but when does that take place. Since currently my new job is finding a job, which consists of me daily faxing, e-mailing, mailing resumes and posting resumes on company websites. However, after I post my resume to certain companies’ websites I always wonder when and if I will ever hear from them or am I just lost in the abyss. Example: applied for an inbound customer rep-sales position back on April 23rd and my profile still reads “You have successfully applied online for the Inbound Call Representative – Sales position. Remember to login to this site regularly to keep informed of your current status.” When I call the job hotline to see if I can get a more specific time frame, they repeat to me “You have successfully applied online for the Inbound Call Representative – Sales position. Remember to login to this site regularly to keep informed of your current status.” So, needless to say I am a little discouraged.
