Quicken Loans named #2 in FORTUNE Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For”

Quicken Loans named a FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work ForLots of people think coming in second place is a bad thing.

You aren’t the best. You lost. You came in second.

Not me.

I’m thrilled. We are #2 baby!

That’s right.  FORTUNE released its "100 Best Companies to Work For" list today and guess what? Quicken Loans is #2 this year

Last year we were #17, which is pretty darn good in itself. Over 1500 companies compete to be on the list.  But to be #2?  Wow.  Nice.

And the only thing standing in our way to being the best place to work in the country??? THE GOOGLE! (I can live with that, I guess).

Congratulations to other nine of the top 10 great places that join Quicken Loans on this so very prestigious list. Here’s the top 10:

  1. Google
  2. Quicken Loans
  3. Wegmans Food Markets
  4. Edward Jones
  5. Genentech
  6. Cisco Systems
  7. Starbucks
  8. Qualcomm
  9. Goldman Sachs
  10. Methodist Hospital Systems

According to our profile on FORTUNE’s website announcing us the #2 best place to work in the country:

What makes it (Quicken Loans) so great?
Ethically driven is what one employee calls the online mortgage lender. It avoided the subprime crisis by sticking with plain-vanilla loans.

What makes Google #1?

What makes it so great?
…Google continued to mint millionaires as the stock cracked $700. The company gives stock options to 99% of employees.

Google continued to mint millionaires? The company gives stock options to 99% of employees? Hmmmm….

Oh well, minting millionaires and stock options aside, I’m very happy Quicken Loans is #2 on this list and I’m part of the Quicken Loans family. And trust me, we’ll spend the next year figuring out a way to get the top spot from Google. We jumped from #17 to #2 in one year.  Certainly we can go from #2 to #1.  Watch out Google, here we come.

The others in the top 10 seem like a good crowd to be associated with. The next time I stop at the Starbucks near my house, I’ll tell them that we have something in common. We’re both in the "Top 10 FORTUNE Club!"  Yes!  I like Starbucks by the way, so it pleases me they are also in the top 10

I don’t know too much about the others in the top 10. Anyone have any opinions out there on them?  Please let us know.

So there we are. Five years in the top 20 FORTUNE "Best Companies to Work For" and now we are in the top 10. Nice. In all honesty, this really is a special place to work. And I’m not just saying that because I’m getting a paycheck.

After all, we aren’t minting millionaires and giving away stock options.

Well, at least not that I’m aware of…

  1. Hey, Publix (the grocery store) is on the list. I didn’t check their rank this year, but I noticed the sticker in the window one of the first times I walked in after moving to South Carolina. I noticed because we spend a lot of time talking about “that Fortune logo” on our web site.
So, as I was checking out, I asked the cashier, “Is this place good enough to work for to warrant the Fortune ranking?”
“Absolutely! I’ve been here for nine years, and I love the way they treat me.”
A grocery store. In a not-depressed region with plenty of other job opportunities.
So, I asked the bagger the same question.
“Yeah! I’ve worked here for eight years, and I’ve rotated through jobs just to keep it interesting.”
I only *hope* we can live up to that!

  4. Well when they hire people who smell like #2 its no suprise they are #2. Just remember #2 is like being the 1st place loser.

  5. Hey Ian – I’ve been working at Quicken Loans for about 2 years in a few different positions. Seems like every person I’ve come across smells like fresh cut roses. Never noticed any hygiene negligence or lingering stench. I’ll keep my sniffer on patrol though. Thanks for reading!

  6. Hey Ian, looking at your email address, I see where you work. Strangely, I don’t remember seeing D&L on the list, where did you place?

  8. Daddy, I have to confess that you sometimes smell like ….#2. I know I do sometimes when I am too excited about my bone party and forget to clearn up myself. Love, Grover G.

  9. Wow, it dosent take much to get the #2 company personnel all riled up. I work for a very small company that would not be on the fortune 500 list or whatever People Magazine yardstick you are being evaluated for this month.
Cant we all just get along. Such a talented group of writers should not be wasting their time trying to make themselves feel better by putting others down. Now get back to writing some more neat-o articles about everyday slice of life occurances and annoyances.
    All my love. Ian
