Happy Birthday Elvis and David Bowie

Happy Birthday Elvis and David BowieIt’s kind of a slow day here over at the DIFF so I thought I’d celebrate the birthdays today of two of the greatest and most influencial musicians/performers to ever live.

Today just happens to be the birthday of the King himself, Mr. Elvis Aaron Presley and the great glam/art/rock/pre-punk/dance/retro/minimalist genius David Bowie. Both made great music.

Even Chuck D. from Public Enemy, who sort of hated on Elvis in the lyrics of "Fight the Power", had to later concede that Elvis really was pretty cool, especially in his younger days.

That he was.

Here’s a bit about both from Wikipedia:

David Bowie, born David Robert Jones on 8 January 1947, is an English musician, actor, record producer and arranger. Active in five decades of rock music and frequently reinventing his music and image, Bowie is widely regarded as an innovator, particularly for his work in the 1970s. He has been cited as an influence by many musicians. Bowie is also known for his distinctive baritone voice.

Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977; middle name sometimes written Aron)a was an American singer, actor and musician. A cultural icon, he is commonly known simply as "Elvis", and is also sometimes referred to as "The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll" or "The King".

In 1954, Presley began his career as one of the first performers of rockabilly, an uptempo fusion of country and rhythm and blues with a strong back beat. His novel versions of existing songs, mixing "black" and "white" sounds, made him popular—and controversial—as did his uninhibited stage and television performances. He recorded songs in the rock and roll genre, with tracks like "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock" later embodying the style. Presley had a versatile voice and had unusually wide success encompassing other genres, including gospel, blues, ballads and pop. To date, he has been inducted into four music halls of fame.

I won’t take up more space here. You can read more about them on Wikipedia or thousands of other websites.

Happy birthday to two of the great ones.

My all time favorite album is Low (and I love brian eno’s stuff as well).Anyway, I figured maybe since you’re honoring Elvis’ birthday you’d be interested in checking out my site which is honoring his birthday by putting the spotlight on collectors of all things Elvis. We even interviewed some of them.
