Farmer uses cow poop for power and saves $200,000

Great article today in CNN about a farmer who saved a lot of cash by turning cow manure into a power source at his Pennsylvania farm. Using brown to make some green and go green. We like it.

The DIFF Ninja sent me the tip on this story. Thanks DIFF Ninja!

Read about it at the link above or you can check out the video about it below. Enjoy!

Jill and Kevin take the wedding march to a whole new level!

WeddingDanceI’ve never been a fan of weddings. They’ve just always seemed so stuffy to me.  Everything is so organized and planned and predictable.

But last month Jill and Kevin of St. Paul, MN decided to step out of box and do something different (which we, of course, love).  You have to figure if a couple can have this much fun on their way up to the alter, they’ve got to have pretty good odds that the rest of their marriage will be amazing.

If you haven’t seen the video yet (over a eleven million views on YouTube in just over a week!), you can hop on over to YouTube and check them out.

Canine to Five – Detroit’s coolest doggy day care featured on CNN Money

Canine to Five, my favorite Detroit dog day care (and night care for that matter) was recently featured on CNN Money as a business that is beating the recession.

That's cool. I'm glad they are doing great because I really like this business and I hope they continue to grow for a long time.  Here's why I like them:

  • They offer a good service at reasonable rates
  • They have invested in a pretty run down part of Detroit and replaced an abandoned building with a thriving business
  • The owner(s) and workers are always nice and very friendly
  • They have a really cool Saturday morning dog park where you can take your dogs and meet cool people
  • They get involved in the Detroit community and support local causes
  • Rumor has it there will be a discount for Quicken Loans employees when we move downtown (sweet!)

I've attended the Saturday dog park several times and I've used Canine to Five for weekend boarding and for a dog training class I can say my dogs really seem to like the place. Here's the video of Canine to Five on CNN Money. Congrats to Liz and the staff over there. Excellent publicity for an awesome local business!

Flower photography by Flower Power – a young entrepreneur enjoys the sweet smell of success

Flower Photos by Flower Power featured on the DIFFThis is exactly the kind of post I had in mind when we first starting planning for this blog about three years ago. It's picture-perfect as a matter of fact! He he he.

Anyway, this blog is supposed to be about us (Quicken Loans employees) sharing things that we think qualify as something special or cool and worth talking about. Which brings me to today's post.

It's about Flower Power, a really cool company that offers some really cool photography of flowers (and at least one butterfly). Flower Power is owned and managed by a young artist who does this in her spare time. And her amount of spare time is dictated by how much homework her elementary school teachers hand out to her.

That's right. The owner/operator of Flower Power is 11-year old Lily Arnett, whose talents have not gone unnoticed. She was featured recently in an article in the Oakland Press. We hear her business is doing well, and growing. Awesome.

Flower Photograpy by Flower Power on the DIFF blogLily even donates a percentage of her profits to Oakland County, Michigan animal shelters.

Pretty cool.

Please check out her site and buy a photo or two if you're so inclined.

Congrats Lily. Your entrepreneurial spirit is amazing.

We hope you have a very successful and fun business for years to come.

Quicken Loans welcomes new family member Stylecaster The DIFF is proud to welcome the newest addition to the Quicken Loans family – Stylecaster.

Check out this fun post from the blog of Quicken Loans Chairman Dan Gilbert:

Quicken Loans in the Compuware Building video

Wow. The Compuware Building is cool. VERY cool.

We mentioned last week that we are now officially moving to downtown Detroit early next year. We toured the Compuware Building last week and had a huge meeting at the Fillmore Theater (sorry, but it will always be the State Theater to me).

Check out the vid. Me likes it.

Detroit Free Press: “How Quicken Loans lives up to name”

Detroit Free Press: "How Quicken Loans lives up to name"
Insightful new article from the Free Press' Tom Walsh this morning which talks about us, our move and how we've been dealing with the mortgage "crisis" the last couple years.

Thing is, we didn't just deal with it. We took it and found every opportunity in it to come out on top. And come out on top is exactly what we did.

In May 2009, not even 2 years into the whole mortgage melee, we reported our best month ever, blowing past our original monthly goal of $2 billion in closed loans. Then we blew past $3 billion. At month's end, we had closed just over $3.1 billion in home loans. We were beyond proud, beyond excited and beyond thankful that, through it all, America had allowed us the privilege of working with them to refinance and buy new homes.

The article, which features commentary from an interview with Quicken Loans CEO Bill Emerson from just last week, explains the what and how of the perfect storm that allowed us to have our best month ever.

Favorpals, a world without money

Favor Pals is The DIFFSo I was perusing the lovely World Wide Web and came across this site that in the current state of the economy appears to be genius: Favorpals, a world without money.  It’s a website that allows people across the country or across town to trade their skills.  Instead of paying for things you need with cash, you can pay with a favor.

Right now a guy in Massachusetts without health insurance needs a dentist.  So he’s offering his skills as an organic landscaper as payment.

An avid reader and internet usability pro (someone who tests how functional websites are) in San Francisco traded skills for books.

Need a handyman?  Well, can you clean or cut hair or teach someone computer skills?  Then offer up a trade!  And if you think that there’s nothing you can offer for the things you want, Favorpals offers a great list of ideas.  Help move furniture, set up for a party, drop someone off at the airport, or offer a sympathetic ear.

You can browse favors by location, category or how recently they were posted.  The site also has a section where you can trade your skills with charity organizations for “good karma”.

So the next time you start thinking about the things you might need and how you’re going to pay for them, think about offering up a trade instead and imagine a DIFFerent kind of world, one without money.

Quicken Loans is moving to downtown Detroit – it’s official!

Quicken Loans is moving to downtown DetroitWell, you may not have heard it here first, but Quicken Loans is moving downtown. There's been several announcements about this in the past few years and lots of speculation, but now it's official.  Here's the deal:

  • 1,700 Quicken Loans team members are moving downtown in mid 2010 as the first phase. Others will follow
  • We're moving to several floors of the Compuware Building
  • This is just the beginning of Quicken Loans' dedication to rebuilding Detroit. See Dan Gilbert's quote below

“We pledge to fulfill our commitment to the city. This is an interim
step that allows us to begin transforming Detroit into a high-tech hub
of business and ingenuity,” said company founder and chairman Dan
Gilbert. “Our goal is to develop a downtown headquarters once
construction financing becomes available for large-scale building
projects the likes of which we plan to undertake.”

You can read more info and get more details here on our official Quicken Loans moving to downtown Detroit press release.

See you down there soon!

Evian babies rapping and rollerskating – who wouldn’t love it?

The Evian babies rapping and rollerskating vid has over 5 million views (and growing quickly). That, pretty much, qualifies as viral and I can see why it's so popular. It's really cool

Excellent graphic and really cool (cute) concept. I don't even like bottled water (don't believe the hype, I say) but man this video is great!

Check it out:

And just in case you want more, the even made a "Making of the Evian babies video" video.

Good job Evian.
