Tomorrow is Election Day – Vote!

                 USam_VoteL
If you’re anything like me, you’re probably at your wit’s end with being bombarded by political ads every time you turn on the TV. And, if you’re not like me and were oblivious to the fact they have been running nonstop for the past few days, you must live under a rock.

The good news is that after tomorrow, you’ll get to enjoy your favorite TV shows again, minus the noise.

Why?

Because, tomorrow is November 2, which is Election Day! This year is the 2010 US mid-term elections.

If you haven’t been paying attention, don’t worry. We’re not voting for the President yet, but it’s still very important.

Mid-terms are every two years, when all 435 members of the House of Representatives stand for re-election.  Up for grabs this year are 37 out of 100 seats in the Senate and 37 Governorships. You can go to your Secretary of State website to find all the voting information you need.

If you’re a registered voter, get out and vote tomorrow! If you’re not, all you have to do is print out a voter registration application online, fill it out and mail it in. Then, you’ll be able to make a difference in the next election.  Remember to educate yourself about the candidates and issues before you make your way to the polls!

I’ll be sporting my “I Voted” sticker proudly tomorrow. Will you?

“Tweet for ALS” Needs Your Help Now!

9-8-2010 1-28-51 PM

Along with the Walk to Defeat ALS, Quicken Loans is raising money through a project called "Tweet for ALS." No, you don't have to have a Twitter account to take part either! “Tweet for ALS” is a way to use social media to drive awareness and participation to raise money for ALS. (Lou Gehrig ’s Disease)

With today’s popularity of social networking and with the help of social media users everywhere to spread the word, our goal is to raise $70,000 in 7 days. We’re feeling quite ambitious this year, because we’ve set the goal higher and challenged everyone to join our team in helping us reach it.

The concept is simple:

1.) 7 days (Sept 20-26)
2.) Goal: $70,000 for research & medical support for ALS
3.) Donate, Tweet, Share
4.) Win cool Prizes
5.) Help change people’s lives

By creating a project on Crowdrise.com, we’ve made it incredibly fast and easy for everyone to get involved.  Anyone can go to “Tweet for ALS” to donate and share with their family and friends right now.

When you make a donation to “Tweet for ALS” this week, you will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win cool prizes. Some of the giveaways include iPod Nanos, Flip Cams, Detroit Pistons “Honorary Ball Kid” certificate, Detroit Red Wings Chris Drapper signed hockey stick and tickets to the first Cleveland vs. Miami game of the season.

Although the time period to donate and be entered into the drawing ends September 26, "Tweet for ALS" will still accept donations when the "giveaway" week is over. If you want to be a part of using social media for social good, this is the perfect opportunity for you to get involved!

Summer of Stars

7-20-2010 1-09-48 PM You know those Michigan summers that we anxiously await all year long for? Well now, the rest of the world knows what we’re talking about thanks to David Arquette.

While filming Scream 4 this summer in Ann Arbor, he’s been tweeting non-stop about how amazing Michigan is! If you don’t believe me, just take a look!

David's tweets have included photos of Michigan sunsets, local restaurants and even a pawn shop in Pontiac he had luck at! Pure Michigan has also taken notice of David's positive tweets promoting Michigan.

Who Will Call Detroit Their New Home After 5 O’clock?

Quicken Loans new home was once again featured in the Detroit Free Press today! This time the main focus wasn’t the move into the Compuware Building downtown, but rather, the employees themselves and how they will acclimate to the transition from Livonia.

Home_img01As everyone is preparing for the big move, some will even choose to pick up their lives and move downtown with the company.” Go big or go home,” right!? Some Quicken Loans employees have recently toured downtown lofts and apartments to possibly make their new home. With the development of fresh, innovative real estate buildings downtown, there many options to choose from.

What do I think about this?

I love it! I think living in a unique loft downtown Detroit would be awesome, especially when work is right around the corner. Living in the city puts you at the heart of everything and the possibilities are endless in Detroit. People who aren’t from around here may call me or anyone else crazy for even considering this, but Detroit seems to hold a bright future in its hands. As a recent college graduate, the career and life decisions I make right now will affect my life forever. I see the decision to move downtown Detroit as an exciting opportunity to take advantage of taking part in its re-birth. It may be taking a chance, yes, but you will never know what might have been unless you take these chances.

Animal Band Epiphany

While sitting outside at a family party this weekend, I noticed my 8-year-old niece’s wrists were covered with little neon bracelets. So, I asked her what the significance of them was. She gave me the most shocking look and couldn’t believe that I had never seen these stretchy, new accessories. It took me the longest time, before I noticed that when the bracelet is removed, it takes the shape of an animal or another fun figure. Such a simple idea and now they’ve turned into a bigger fad than the power bead bracelets of 2000. If you’re a parent, chances are you’ve seen or heard of these bracelets before me. Apparently, I’m out of the loop with the latest “tween” fashion crazes, because they’ve been around for a little while now. They were born in Birmingham, Alabama in 2008 and continued to spread to cities everywhere. With that, these unique wristbands have been banned from some high schools because students use them like rubber bands, reaping havoc for teachers. (At least this is what my niece informed me of!)

By the end of my weekend, I was excited to learn that I wasn’t the only one who just discovered these popular bands. The day after my niece introduced me to them, I met a 26-year-old guy who was sporting one around his wrist. I couldn’t help but ask him “Which animal is that one?!” He got a kick out of it because he just found out about them as well. To top it off, when I got to work Monday morning, I talked to yet another person who came into contact with these little animal bracelets, because of his sister. So now, if you see someone wearing one of these, you'll know what they are and want in on the craze too!

Quicken Loans Interns Embrace Our New Home

Quicken Loans interns had a great time yesterday getting a “taste of Detroit” with Connect After 5 at the Summer Intern Program Kick-Off held at the YMCA downtown. Connect After 5 creates fun, after-work events for employees of local Detroit businesses to socialize and utilize what the city has to offer. Our interns met and mingled with many others, while enjoying food and giveaways from Detroit restaurants and venues. Businesses took over tables and supplied interns with their information and knowledge of the city. The event didn’t stop at food though; there was a DJ to entertain, a photo booth and bean bag toss. At the end of the night interns won prizes such as gift certificates, money and signed baseballs through random drawings. I think it’s safe to say that the event was a success and an awesome start to the summer!

Displayed below is an image of the event, photo courtesy of Connect After 5.
